戸塚氏によると、生きようとする力を付けさせるため生徒をわざと海に落とす。なかには、自分でヨットに這い上がろうとしないで、じっとしている子も珍しくない。自分が何もしなくても、どうせ周りの人が助けてくれるだろうと思っているという。そんなときでも助けない。むしろ助けるそぶりも見せない。結果、生徒はライフジャケットを着けているので溺れる心配はないが、どんどん流されていく。それでも放っておく。やがて暗くなり、望遠鏡で見えるギリギリのところで、ようやく引き上げる。
そして翌日も突き落とす。これを繰り返すうちに生徒は、自分で何とかしなければ、ほんとうに死んでしまうかもしれないと思うようになり、自ら手足をばたつかせ、ヨットに這い上がろうとするようになるという。すると徐々に子どもたちの目つきが変わってくるという。
